IMO decides upon energy efficiency regulation for new ships


Ship builders have to increase the energy efficiency of ships according to the new regulations set by the International Maritime Organisation. The new regulations, expected to come into force on January 1, 2013 set an energy efficiency target of 10% for newly built ships and works towards an efficiency increase of 30% by 2024.

However, the new regulations of the IMO are not the only measures the logistics industry faces in regards to the increased attention for carbon reduction. Other environmental initiatives such as the European Emission Trading Scheme, Sustainable Stock Exchanges and the pressure from large clients that require emission data for publications of their sustainability report are also affecting the industry.
